Titans five keys vs 49ers

As the Tennessee Titans come to training camp, the tight end position seems pretty settled compared to most.

After all, Delanie Walker is coming off a Pro Bowl season, one in which he was the Titans only consistent receiving threat in the passing game. Walker caught 94 passes for 1,088 yards and six touchdowns.

The Titans are likely to continue to use the two tight end formation quite often this season, meaning that veterans Craig Stevens and Anthony Fasano will both have roles as well.

Stevens re-signed with the Titans in the off-season, and is regarded as one of the better blocking tight ends in the NFL. He also is now the longest tenured Titan, having been with the club since being a third-round pick in 2008.

Fasano, a former Titans killer when he played in Miami and Kansas City, came to Tennessee as a free agent last year and can fill in capably at both the on-the-line tight end spot and as the H-back or receiving tight end as well.

Beyond those three, things are up for grabs, with a fourth tight end a decent possibility to make the roster again. That, of course, could be just as dependent on how many wide receivers and running backs are kept for 2016. Last year, the Titans actually kept a fifth tight end to open the year and had only four wideouts. That won’t happen again this season, but there remains a battle for the fourth spot regardless.

Phillip Supernaw, whose aggressive style on special teams earned him a roster spot last year, is the incumbent who will work to hold on to that fourth tight end spot. Special teams again will likely be his calling card. His primary competition will be Jerome Cunningham, who was snagged off waivers from the Jets earlier this off-season.

Also in the fray is former University of Tennessee tight end Alex Ellis, who would appear to be more of a practice squad candidate at this juncture, given the number of veterans ahead of him on the depth chart.

Barring a surprise or an injury, tight end is one of the few places on the roster where most things are sorted out. Walker, Stevens and Fasano would appear to be locks, with Supernaw battling Cunningham for spot at the back of the roster.
